The reality is that this concept was embraced by <strong>Maria Therese of Austria<\/strong> over two hundred years ago, not out of goodwill or ecology but as a method of controlling the local farming community, food chain and population at large.<\/p>\n<h2>The Osmize &#8216;s history, from Maria Theresa to today<\/h2>\n<p>Maria Theresa allowed the local farmers to sell their own crops, livestock and edible crafts directly in the \u201cCarso\u201d area and Slovenija around 1784.\u00a0 The Empress sought a method to reduce riots among the citizens after imposing harsh taxes by allowing the local food sale to be tax-free.\u00a0 This highly political act led to the birth of \u201cosmize\u201d, goodwill or environmental benefit be damned.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1852\" class=\"thumbnail alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2013\/11\/osmize-via-thatsmoreitalia.jpeg\"><img class=\"size-full wp-image-1852 \" src=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2013\/11\/osmize-via-thatsmoreitalia.jpeg\" alt=\"osmize via thatsmoreitalia\" width=\"440\" height=\"241\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2013\/11\/osmize-via-thatsmoreitalia.jpeg 440w, https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2013\/11\/osmize-via-thatsmoreitalia-344x188.jpeg 344w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 440px) 100vw, 440px\" \/><\/a><div class=\"caption\">A red branch (&#8220;la frasca&#8221;) that signes a Osmiza<\/div><\/div>\n<p>The word<strong> &#8220;osmizza&#8221;<\/strong> comes from the Slovenian word &#8220;osmec&#8221; which refers to the number of days the venue could stay open and sale to buyers, 8 days or any multiple of 8 days, i.e. 16, 24, etc.\u00a0\u00a0 Every farmer or private home could stay open and sell products locally grown such as wine, meat, honey, fruits, and vegetables.\u00a0\u00a0 The imperial authority imposed just one condition, a clear sign over the venue making the temporary sale well known.\u00a0\u00a0 The selected sign was a &#8220;red branch\u201d, &#8220;la frasca&#8221;, is the same sign that still hangs on the venues two centuries late.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Osmizza&#8221; is one of the best kept local secrets of this &#8220;frontier&#8221; land.\u00a0 With portions of the late Austro Hungarian Empire split after the First World War into different countries, the tradition of local farmers selling their products has remained vibrant and it is customary to reach on &#8220;osmizza&#8221; and sit for a glass of wine and some food any time of the day and just chat.\u00a0 You will most likely need a local to introduce you to one of the temporary open osmizza and be prepared to enjoy a bottle of white Vitovska or strong red Terrano, a dish of &#8220;porcina&#8221; and the banter of &#8220;osmizza&#8221; regulars.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1851\" class=\"thumbnail alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2013\/11\/osmiza-via-marecarso.eu_.jpg\"><img class=\"size-large wp-image-1851\" src=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2013\/11\/osmiza-via-marecarso.eu_-870x490.jpg\" alt=\"Osmiza in Carso, Northest Italy, via marecarso.eu\" width=\"870\" height=\"490\" \/><\/a><div class=\"caption\">Osmiza in Carso, northeast Italy, via marecarso.eu<\/div><\/div>\n<h2>Make an Osmizza Adventure<\/h2>\n<p>You can devote a full day to discover the &#8220;osmizza&#8221; territory but I suggest pace yourself when trying the local wine in every &#8220;osmizza&#8221; so you can enjoy the amazing winding roads and breathtaking panoramic views along the way. You can even rent bikes and discover the\u00a0land treasures\u00a0while making some healthy exercise.<\/p>\n<p>If you start from Trieste, just head northwest towards <strong>Aurisina<\/strong> and park your car in the local tourist information park office.\u00a0 Let the wild beauty of the <strong>&#8220;Rilke trail&#8221;<\/strong> unwind before your eyes with the white cliffs over the Trieste Gulf, Mediterranean vegetation and solitary seagulls calling out to one another.\u00a0 After reaching the <strong>Duino Castel<\/strong>, turn back and stop to one of the Aurisina osmize, a wonderful reward for your trekking adventure.<br \/>\nYou can be sure one of the three \u201cosmize\u201d of Aurisina will be open and the local information office staff will be more than delighted to provide you with all the information.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1843\" class=\"thumbnail alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2013\/11\/osmizza-4.jpg\"><img class=\" wp-image-1843 \" src=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2013\/11\/osmizza-4.jpg\" alt=\"Credits: Massimo Crivellari (POR FESR 2007-2013) \" width=\"216\" height=\"246\" \/><\/a><div class=\"caption\">Credits: Massimo Crivellari, via POR FESR<\/div><\/div>\n<p>Once you have enjoyed your first glass of local grown\u00a0<strong>Vitovska<\/strong>\u00a0white wine, you are ready to get back on road towards the Carsic plain and towards new enogastronomical experience.\u00a0\u00a0 Between Malcina, far north down to Prepotto, extreme south, going through Precenico and S. One trail will bring you to \u201cosmizze\u201d, local venues open just some days every year where to taste local wine and delicatessen such as sausages and homemade bread.
