Therefore, scientists all around the world are looking not only for plastic alternatives, but also for ways, how to solve the actual problem of plastic waste. On a landfill site in Pakistan, scientists discovered, that fungus called Aspergillus tubingensis can feeds on plastic.<\/h4>\n<p>A group of researchers from <strong>Chinese Academy of Sciences<\/strong> found out, that common soil fungus Aspergillus Tubingensis can be used to break down plastic polymers. They took a sample from<strong> landfill site in Pakistan<\/strong> and examined it in a lab. Based on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0269749117300295?via%3Dihub\" target=\"_blank\">Environmental Pollution journal<\/a>, scientists found that the mycelium of the fungus colonizes polyester polyurethane plastic, causing surface degradation and scarring.<\/p>\n<p>Aspergillus Tubingensis is<strong> typically found in soil<\/strong> but instead of dead organic matter like most microorganisms feed on, it can also<strong> feed on the surface of plastic<\/strong>. Waste plastic, which would persist in the environment for ages, can be break down by this fungus only in <strong>few\u00a0weeks<\/strong>. It provides hope of solving the global problem of excessive waste production.<\/p>\n<h2>It is not\u00a0as easy as it looks like<\/h2>\n<p>The leading scientist, Sehroon Khan, said: \u201cWe wanted to identify solutions which already existed in nature, but finding microorganisms which can do the job isn\u2019t easy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There are several<strong> factors affecting fungus\u00b4s capacity<\/strong> to break down plastic. The most important ones are <strong>temperature, pH balance<\/strong> of surrounding and type of <strong>culture medium<\/strong> in place. Scientists now have to figure out the conditions, which would be the best to implement this fungus into practical solutions.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2017\/09\/chinese-scientists-have-found-a-plastic-eating-fungus?utm_content=buffer46102&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=facebook.com&amp;utm_campaign=buffer\" target=\"_blank\">World Economic Forum<\/a>, Aspergillus tubingensis can solve also problem of <a href=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/2017\/09\/plastic-all-ar\u2026tudy-orb-media\/\" target=\"_blank\">microplastic in our drinking water<\/a>\u00a0by being put to work in a waste treatment plant, or in soil contaminated with the material.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16013\" class=\"thumbnail alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/09\/waste-1741127_1920.jpg\"><img class=\"size-large wp-image-16013\" src=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/09\/waste-1741127_1920-870x490.jpg\" alt=\"Fungus can feed on plastic\" width=\"870\" height=\"490\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/09\/waste-1741127_1920-870x490.jpg 870w, https:\/\/ecobnb.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/09\/waste-1741127_1920-570x320.jpg 570w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 870px) 100vw, 870px\" \/><\/a><div class=\"caption\">Photo by Ben_Kerckx via Pixabay<\/div><\/div>\n<h2>Not only plastic-eating fungus<\/h2>\n<p>It is not the first time, when scientists found organisms, which can help us to\u00a0break down the plastic.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, they found <strong>caterpillar<\/strong>, which feed on beeswax, can also feed on plastic, as the molecular structure of these two is similar.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mealworms<\/strong> which can convert half of given plastic into carbon dioxide and then excreted the rest in the form of biodegradable droppings can also help with plastic waste.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, there was<strong>\u00a0bacterium<\/strong>, which can degrade and assimilate poly (ethylene terephthalate) \u2013 PET.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It is interesting fact, that the <strong>nature<\/strong> adapts to human carelessness. We changed the environment excessively and Mother Earth reacts with organisms solving our mindlessness.
