9 out of 10 people breathe air too\u00a0polluted<\/strong>: this is the dramatic datas<\/strong>\u00a0that\u00a0WHO<\/strong> has spread in the most\u00a0detailed report ever on air pollution and the consequent damage<\/strong> to health<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Each year, about 3 million people die due to exposure to air pollution, especially in South East Asia and the Western Pacific regions. In particular air pollution causes cardiovascular<\/strong> disease<\/strong>, stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary<\/strong> disease<\/strong> and lung cancer<\/strong>. To these deaths we must add\u00a0those caused by indoor pollution: in 2012 around 6 million and a half people died because of indoor or outdoor pollution, the 11.6% of all global deaths. Air pollution affects mostly children and the elderly, and generally the most vulnerable population.<\/p>\n

Why is the air polluted?<\/h2>\n

The main sources of air pollution are the inefficient transport<\/strong>, household fuel<\/strong> and waste<\/strong> burning, coal-fired<\/strong> power plants, and industrial<\/strong> activities<\/strong>. But not only human activities cause air pollution; for example, the air quality can be affected by dust<\/strong> storms<\/strong>, especially in desert regions.<\/p>\n
