It will become four times larger than California. The marine reserve<\/strong> of Papah\u0101naumoku\u0101kea<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0was established in 2006 and now protects the North-West area of \u200b\u200bthe Hawaiian archipelago<\/strong> over a large area of \u200b\u200b360,000 square kilometers of ocean waters.<\/p>\n

A few days ago came the great news that President Obama<\/strong> intends, before the end of his term, expand the Hawaii’s reserve, making it the largest protected area on the<\/strong> planet<\/strong>. In a time when climate change is damaging and putting at risk whole ecosystems, Obama’s decision might save a part of the rich life of the oceans<\/strong>. According to the White House, the extended reserve of Hawaii \u00a0will protect more than 7,000 marine species<\/strong>, including whales, green turtles and rare Hawaiian monk<\/strong> seals<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument, UNESCO<\/strong> heritage<\/strong>, is an important part of Hawaiian<\/strong> culture<\/strong>, a sacred place, and so the US decision not only protects the environment, but also preserves the traditions\u00a0 of local<\/strong> communities<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\t\t
